For example, an older child’s bedtime may need to be age appropriate, but their settling routine of soothing nurture may need to meet their developmental age. Nurture, the warm, unconditional and predictable provision of basic needs, maintains the child at their level of arousal. It emphasizes to the child the importance of the adult in a caregiving role: soothing, calming, quieting, caretaking activities that make the world safe, predictable, warm and secure. This reassures the child that adults provide comfort and stability and meets the child’s unfulfilled younger needs, and helps the child to be able to relax and allow themselves to be taken care of.

This stress will be higher if the move is unwanted or unplanned and the child is not involved, consulted and prepared. The main task of stabilization is to reduce the child’s arousal, so that they can begin to feel safe in a predictable world. During the integration phase, arousal levels may fluctuate wildly, and adults need to be skilled at both challenging the child and soothing them. Later, the child’s general arousal levels will be lower, and the focus becomes adapting to the world beyond. However, as the child nears the end of their placement, their arousal once again will rise.
